Job Summary

The Community Relations Specialist supports the execution of the Port’s community relations program, including establishing and maintaining Port relationships and coalitions with community-based organizations to build support for the Port’s mission and activities as well as representing the Port to the community through coalition-building and engagement in civic groups.
This position engages a multi-department team in the planning and execution of external special events including groundbreakings, dedications, press conferences, open houses and receptions. Duties are performed in coordination with the Manager, Community Relations.

Primary Functions

Supports the Manager, Community Relations in establishing and maintaining Port relationships with community organizations in Pierce County to build support for the Port’s mission and activities. Represents the Port to the community through engagement in civic groups. Interfaces with the public on impacts of port operations on the community and other public concerns.
Implements strategies to address public concerns through coordination with other port staff and port customers.
Implements the Port’s Public Outreach Program in Pierce County which includes the speaker’s bureau, public tours, and booths at select public festivals.
Supports Commission and Executive Director involvement in appropriate Port events and community events/presentations, including drafting remarks and developing presentations, coordinating dates with the executive department, and keeping executive department apprised of event details.
Implements high-profile external Port programs and special events (e.g., receptions, press conferences, ribbon cuttings, open houses, Touch-a-Truck etc.).

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in community development, public affairs, political science, communications, marketing, or other related fields is required. An additional four (4) years of relevant experience may substitute for a bachelor’s degree.
Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with civic leaders in various communities or non-profit groups and business leaders to build collaborative community efforts and working with the public is required.

Additional Requirements

The successful candidate must have highly developed interpersonal skills that enable this person to form trusting relationships, to handle delicate situations with tact and diplomacy, and to express enthusiasm and creativity and a strong customer/public service attitude. Superb oral and written communication skills are required, as well as the skills necessary to work with the Port’s Communications Department in creating PowerPoint presentations and developing talking points/speeches for Port Commissioners and port staff. The chosen applicant should possess a strong understanding of the various communities in Pierce County and a natural desire to continually refine the elements of the Port’s Community Relations program. This position requires a strong attention to detail, the ability to work under pressure, the ability to anticipate and plan for potential contingencies, a well-developed ability to multi-task, the ability to motivate and lead multi-department teams and external coalitions, and a positive attitude. Public speaking experience and strong writing skills are essential.
This individual must demonstrate a caring customer service attitude, a strong commitment to operational excellence and be able to display behaviors and a commitment to the organization’s core values. The Port of Tacoma has implemented a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy to safeguard the health of Port employees, their families, and the public we serve, as well as to meet the requirements of Executive Order 14042, which requires federal contractors like the Port to adopt and enforce a mandatory vaccination policy. Effective 12/8/2021 the federal mandate and Port policy have been suspended due to a federal court injunction until further notice.
In accordance with the Immigration Control and Reform Act of 1986, all persons offered employment must provide acceptable proof of identity and authorization to work in the United States. Proof will be required prior to employment.
The successful candidate must possess (or obtain within 30 days of employment) a valid driver’s license. Candidate must be able to successfully complete a post-offer substance abuse test (includes both drug and alcohol) and background investigation. Candidate must also be able to obtain/maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), which is a program managed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
