Couto Homes, Inc. has retained ePraxis LLC, a premier-level executive headhunting, talent selection, and executive coaching company, to conduct a nationwide search for a difference-making Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Couto Homes (coutohomes.com) is a thriving family-owned custom design-build residential construction and community development business serving the greater Ft Worth, TX area started by owner/founder Donny Couto. The Owner/Founder (O/F) started building homes at a young age with his father where he learned about the value of hard work, keeping your word, treating people right, and the high importance of a customer-centric approach to business. From his early experience, the O/F developed the Couto Homes values, and the company has stayed true to them ever since. “Treat people right. Never go back on your word. The CEO will work closely with the O/F and executive team in continuing our profitable business operations and developing our next-generation business strategy, which includes growing our market share, increasing our operational capacity, creating a product innovation road map, and charting a course for continued growth and development of our people. We seek a CEO who is a player-coach who will actively develop, mentor, and train our executive and next-generation management. The CEO will lead, direct, and grow Couto Homes enterprise footprint ensuring our competitiveness, product innovation, industry opportunity responsiveness, and keen sense of listening to our customers. The company would like to grow 3x in the next 5-10 years and we are seeking a CEO to take us there and beyond. As benchmarks of current capacity and growth trends, the company is scheduled to build and close on approximately 180 residential housing units in 2022, reflecting 20% YoY growth, and we think more sustainable growth is possible.

Overview of the CEO Role at Couto Homes
At Couto Homes, the CEO is the executive in charge of all aspects of the business. Next to the Owner/Founder (O/F), the CEO is the highest executive position in the company and is the primary business associate to the O/F himself. The CEO will develop strategy and tactics to lead Couto Homes through the business objectives outlined in the O/F’s broad vision and strategic intent planning exercises. The CEO will execute those actions, continue the superior performance of Couto Homes, develop the business systems and staff to improve and grow the company and achieve the targeted financial goals and objectives of the O/F. The CEO will be a brand ambassador for the Couto brand and enhance our position in the marketplace. The scope of the CEO’s responsibilities encompasses every nuance of our home-building business. The CEO is responsible for the successful delivery of our homes reflecting the “Couto Way”, fully satisfying client expectations; resulting in excellent delivered facilities at a reasonable profit. The CEO is responsible for shepherding Cuoto’s “hedgehog” strategy by leading, directing, and encouraging the team to conduct those everyday actions in marketing, design, client relations, negotiations, and home production completions, closings, and customer hand-offs that lead to our continued success.

The role of the Couto Homes CEO:

Partner with the Owner/Founder (O/F): operate as an extension of the O/F.
Participate with the O/F in planning for growth and profitability. Create necessary plans to implement the means to achieve the strategic ends identified, with or by the O/F. Coach the staff to gain full understanding of those objectives, create staff ownership of the way forward and its proper implementation.
Develop a productive working relationship with full transparency of information and data sharing with the O/F, and seek regular alignment and communications with the owner to assure that the O/F’s input, insights, and aspirations are embedded in the strategy for the company; and thereafter, incorporate these concepts in your leadership of the company, being mindful that as CEO, you are fully in charge of the company and its direction and performance.
Understand our business and prepare a dynamic vision for the growth of our company.
Keen negotiator that safeguards the interest of the company while striking a win-win alignment with our customers, subcontractors, and vendors.
Lead and direct our management team, providing coaching, direction, and accountability for the full span of operations including finance, operations, sales, innovation, information technology, human capital, HR, etc.
Direct and encourage standardization, processes, efficiency, and best practices throughout our company footprint.
Ensure that our company has a capable and responsive treasury, finance, tax, and regulatory capacity for sustained profitable operations and future growth.
Understand at a deep level what causes sales in our residential home building, design-build, and residential community development industry and collaborate with our management team on strategy, tactics, and support of sales.
Provide direction and guidance for the O/F on pathways for the development and mentoring of our emerging leaders and identify and hire additional talent for our company as needed.
Develop systems, processes, and procedures that continuously improve our efficiency, productivity, and results both internally and externally to make us the best in our business.
Support a mindset of continual improvement, LEAN manufacturing, and management improvements.
Develop a product innovation strategy to safeguard our business and develop our next-generation home designs, feature innovations, and smart home integration capabilities.
Develop career paths for our employees within the company to improve retention, career development, and the culture of hiring from within, when available.
Embrace lifelong learning and lead by example this character trait throughout the business.
Develop a cadence and reporting process for the O/F that provides regular, meaningful, strategic, and tactical governance information so that owner/founder and CEO are in alignment for the best interest of the company.

Strong leadership ability. An executive presence that inspires confidence and trust. Become a visible and vocal evangelist for our company by developing an in-depth knowledge of the Couto Homes products and values.

Excellent ability to lead people and manage processes/products; Developed leadership and management acumen (i.e., demonstrated ability to assess, recruit, retain, mentor, motivate and hold team members accountable)
Continually drive effective results. Experience developing and using dashboards and tracking metrics (KPIs) to help the management, sales, and operations teams, stakeholders, dealers, and employees monitor their own performance and focus on the key drivers of the business.
Communicate effectively at all levels. Crisp, clear communicator with the presence to effectively interact with the business owner, management team, and be approachable by all the employees.

Other Background and Traits we seek to find in our CEO:

Prior family-owned business enterprise leadership experience.
Deep experience with land development, production-level residential home building, and custom home building.
At least five years of experience as President and/or CEO, or divisional VP with full P&L responsibility.
At least ten years experience as GM, COO, CFO, VP Sales, Senior Project Executive.
Experience leading operating companies with growing revenues generating between $50 million to $200 million in annual fee revenue from homebuilding sales and production.
Experience with finance and capital development of land development and construction projects.
MBA preferred.
BA/BS required though this requirement may be substituted with ten years of progressively upward management experience.
Demonstrated P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow, and core KPI management experience.
Demonstrated experience hiring, developing, and retaining difference-making top talent.
MS Office literacy is a must.
Willingness to travel as required

CompensationCompensation is competitive with a base salary and incentive compensation comprised of target sales goals and milestone-based triggers.

RelocationIf the candidate is not already living in the greater Fort Worth area, we prefer that the CEO is willing to relocate and provide visible support and leadership by relocating near our home office in Granbury, Texas.

Pay: $235,000.00 – $265,000.00 per year
