SummaryProvides assistance in the daily operation in various areas of the Library. Duties include assisting patrons in their use of the Library, providing administrative support to the assigned supervisors, providing support to Library programs and collection maintenance, checking in and checking out of Library materials, and processing library materials. This is a part-time position. The work schedule will include the ability to work some evenings and weekends.
Organizational Relationships: Reports to: Circulation SupervisorOther: Works closely with all Library staff and general public
Essential Duties & Required Qualifications
Provides customer service to Library users in person and on the telephone
Answers informational and reference questions for all ages regarding the Library’s resources; provide directions to various library sections or other facilities
Assists patrons in circulation related services, such as establishing and renewing Library memberships, checking out of Library materials, inter-library loan requests, and reserving books and collects payments at circulation desk
Assists patrons of all ages with technology support including access to library computers; use of online resources; use of computer software available on public computers; and use of photocopier, scanner and fax machine
Assists patrons of all ages in navigating the Library online catalog
Assists in receiving and sorting returned library materials
Assists in shelving Library materials when needed
Assists in processing and receiving new Library materials, and repairing damaged Library material
Provides administrative support to librarians for collection development, maintenance and assigned supervisors
Attends meetings and training sessions
Performs security, light cleaning, and straightening tasks necessary to open and close the Library facility
Assists in compiling statistics relating to various programs and services; and preparing communications, reports, and mailings
Assists in Library outreach and marketing
Provides support for Library programs by designing, preparing promotional materials, monthly book displays and setting up and cleaning up program spaces, and assisting during events
Ability to work under pressure with few mistakes.
Exceptional customer service must be a high priority.
Required Education and/or ExperienceHigh School Diploma, or its equivalent, plus one (1) year of customer service experience. Working or volunteering in a public or school Library is a plus.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid Texas Class C driver’s license is required or within 90 days of hire date; First Aid/CPR training required or obtained within 6 months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Municipal library operations, library technology systems, and the Dewey Decimal System. Skill/Ability to: organize and maintain a large number of materials; attention to detail; understand and follow instructions; demonstrate proficiency in oral and written communication; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public. Deliver quality customer service; accurately process materials and enter data into computer; process and repair books; use standard word processing and data inquiry software; Also may need to perform mathematical calculations and percentages, Work without direct supervision; attend and understand technical courses; Analyze situations and adopt quick, effective reasonable courses of action, ability to work creatively, independently and cooperatively with others. Possess ability to read and comprehend operation and training manuals, memos, policies and procedures. Possess ability to write reports including words, numbers, abbreviations and note taking. Able to plan, organize and manage multi-faceted programs. Good communication and adaptability skills required.
Equipment, Machines, Tools and Work Aids: Experience in using computer, collection, calculator, telephone, tape recorder, fax machine, and copier.
Physical Demands & Additional InformationPhysical Demands: On occasion, may need to lift and carry up to 50 pounds; pull, pushes or drags up to 50 pounds of materials and supplies. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
